About the Study

Understanding the RA-PURE Nexus in Kenya

This gap analysis was conducted across Nakuru, Kericho, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Busia, Bungoma, and Kakamega counties to understand the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices (RAPs) and productive renewable energy (PURE) technologies among smallholder farmers with farm sizes of 5 acres and below.

Primary data was collected through structured household surveys (320 farmers), Key Informant Interviews with service providers (113) and input/technology suppliers (104), and Focus Group Discussions β€” totalling 537 respondents. Secondary data covered peer-reviewed studies and policy documents from 2015–2025.

RA Practices Are Widespread but Fragmented

Compost/manure (79%), intercropping (74%), and crop rotation (73%) are widely used yet applied in disconnected ways. High-value practices like conservation tillage (26%) and bioslurry (7%) remain marginal across most counties.

Energy Access is High β€” Productive Use is Not

59% of households have grid electricity and 53% use solar, yet 85% use energy mainly for lighting. Only 15% use energy for irrigation β€” despite drought being the number one farming challenge for 83% of households.

Awareness Is Moderate β€” Adoption Lags Far Behind

70% of farmers are aware of RA-PURE approaches, but actual adoption sits at just 17%. Kericho shows the starkest divide β€” 27% awareness yet 0% adoption. The core gap is practical integration, not knowledge.

97% of farmers are willing to adopt RA-PURE systems. Yet 71% cite high upfront costs and 54% cite limited access to finance as primary barriers. Cash transactions dominate supplier markets (76%), limiting farmer investment capacity.
